Celebrating Impact and Innovation in 2024

2024 was a year of remarkable achievements for Tai as we continued to expand our reach, amplify our impact and receive recognition for our efforts in using storytelling for social change. Through our projects and partnerships, Tai has not only reached countless individuals but also inspired change across communities. Our storytelling journey soared to new heights, creating a lasting impact on our beneficiaries and society at large.

The magic of storytelling found a powerful stage with the American Film Series Project, a collaboration with the U.S. Embassy. Month after month, this initiative brought together over 800 young people in universities, youth centers, and schools across Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Zanzibar. Through compelling films tied to significant global themes and panel discussions led by experts, we sparked meaningful conversations that encouraged young minds to see storytelling as a catalyst for awareness and change.

While stories unfolded on screens, another revolution was quietly transforming lives Oky Tanzania, a period tracking app developed in partnership with UNICEF Tanzania. This digital tool became a trusted companion for over 8,000 girls and women across Dar es Salaam, Mtwara, Zanzibar, and Dodoma, with millions more reached through social and traditional media. For girls like Faraja from Mikocheni Secondary School, Oky has been a source of empowerment: “From counting my fingers and writing down my period days in a book, now with Oky, I can track my periods digitally. I feel so safe with my information. Oky is truly my best friend.”

Recognizing the importance of inclusion, we also introduced OkySMS, ensuring even those without smartphones could access life-changing information by sending "OkySMS" to 15070. Amplified by various media platforms, this initiative has reached millions, proving that innovation knows no bounds when driven by the desire to make a difference.

Tai’s creative endeavors earned applause on both local and international stages. At the Silicon Valley Film Festival in the United States and London PAFF 2024, our green-themed animation Kijana Kijani won accolades. Meanwhile, Bahari Mania, an animation on ocean pollution, made waves at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), and Fidi, a story about autism, was celebrated at PLURAL+ 2024 in Portugal, Bantu Film Festival and Tanzania Film Festival Awards. Additionally, at Africa Skills Week 2024 in Ghana, Tai received a prestigious innovation prize. These recognitions are a testament to the power of authentic, locally-rooted stories.

From global stages to grassroots impact, 2024 also saw the birth of new stories with bold messages. PATAPATA, a collaboration with DSW, tackled the importance of accurate sexual reproductive health information for youth. Bahari Mania, an animation in collaboration with the Jakaya Kikwete Foundation, highlighted the urgent issue of ocean pollution. Meanwhile, Uwena, created in partnership with We World, shared an inspiring tale of resilience, telling the story of a young girl with a hearing impairment who overcomes significant challenges to achieve her dreams.

Reflecting back on 2024, one thing is clear our journey has only just begun. With every story we tell, every beneficiary we empower, and every stage we step onto, we are reminded of the immense power of collaboration and creativity. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Together, we will continue to soar even higher.
