Tanzania’s creative industry has reached an exciting milestone with Kijana Kijani, a 3D animated film by Tai Studio, a subsidiary of Tai Impact. This innovative animation recently won the "Best Animation" award at the London Pan African Film Festival in October 2024 and received a special mention at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival, spotlighting Tanzanian storytelling in a powerful way. The project was made possible through funding from the Netherlands Embassy in Tanzania, underscoring the global support behind this impactful initiative.
Produced in 2023, Kijana Kijani has already reached more than 4.98 million people through traditional and digital channels. The animation centers around Heri, a young inventor who tackles the challenges posed by climate change in his community. Heri’s journey reflects issues that resonate deeply with Tanzanians today, showing how climate change disrupts all aspects of life from school attendance affected by water shortages to food security threatened by unstable agricultural conditions. Water scarcity has also led to frequent power cuts, as electricity generation relies on consistent water flow. Through Heri’s example, Kijana Kijani makes clear that climate action isn’t solely the responsibility of government ministries or environmental agencies it requires everyone’s involvement.
Kijana Kijani has become a source of pride for Tanzanian creatives and a point of inspiration for aspiring animators, illustrators, writers, and directors. The film’s international success demonstrates that local talent, with the right support, can reach audiences around the world, sharing stories with unique perspectives that others can learn from and enjoy. For many young Tanzanians considering careers in animation and content creation, the recognition Kijana Kijani has achieved proves that their work can gain international respect and make an impact.
With support from both local and international partners, Kijana Kijani is just the beginning for Tai Studio and other Tanzanian creatives. The international recognition it has earned underscores the potential for Tanzanian voices to share compelling stories on a global platform, raising awareness about the challenges of climate change and inspiring action.
