In celebration of International Youth Day, Oky Tanzania made waves by setting up a booth exhibition at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Center in Dodoma, we were convinced to impress this year’s theme of the youth day “From Clicks to Progress Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development". In collaboration and the support of UNICEF Tanzania, our booth showcased Oky Tanzania, a revolutionary period tracking app designed to empower young girls and promote positive menstrual health hygiene education .
Over three action-packed days, our team connected with more than 400 visitors, including students aged 16-20, young adults aged 20-27, parents and stakeholders. We provided hands-on demonstrations of the Oky Tanzania app, answered a flurry of questions, and guided many through the download process. A standout moment came when we had the honor of presenting Oky Tanzania to Hon. Ridhwani Kikwete, the Minister of State for Labor, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities. His enthusiastic endorsement underscored the app’s potential to transform menstrual health education.
Our project coordinator, Mariam Mintanga, captivated the audience at the Young Innovators Session with her engaging presentation on menstrual health education through digital tools. Her talk, which drew over 700 attendees, sparked significant interest in Oky Tanzania’s innovative unique features and led to a surge in app downloads. One participant remarked, “I love the app, especially the encyclopedia; it’s a game-changer for my daughter.”
The event highlighted Oky Tanzania’s significant impact, receiving high praise for its relevance and effectiveness. While we achieved impressive download numbers, we also recognized the challenge of smartphone accessibility for students. Encouragingly, we saw strong interest from men eager to support their loved ones by downloading the app.
We believe every girl deserves access to accurate menstrual health information. Through Oky Tanzania exhibition in Dodoma it was evident that Oky Tanzania is making a significant impact in raising awareness about menstrual health and empowering individuals with essential information. With the continued support of our amazing partners, we are dedicated to expanding our reach and ensuring young girls can confidently access essential period safety and knowledge.
