Shujaa Press ReleaseA Hero Doesn’t Have to Wear a Cape.

If you are well accustomed to or know a little bit about the Maasai traditions, you have most probably heard of Emorata. Emorata is the Maasai ceremony of manhood which involves circumcision. Unfortunately, it not only involves the male figures but also young girls, making it one of the challenges girls face within their community.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is most definitely illegal under the Sexual Offences Special Provisions Act (SOSPA) of 1998. However, the Maasai view it as a crucial part of their culture as they believe that when a woman does not undergo circumcision, they will lack authority when they are older. FGM is not only a physically painful experience; it also limits the girlchild from continuing her academic journey. In the Maasai traditions, once a girl has become a ‘woman’ through the emorata ceremony, one would say they are ripe and ready for marriage.

In our upcoming 3D Animation Film called Shujaa, we bring you our superhero, Ngeti. She is still the brave and courageous young lady we all know but we do see her in a new light, in the Maasai Land. Shujaa reveals the battle a Maasai girlchild will be most likely to face whilst avoiding FGM for her to thrive in her academic journey and work towards achieving her hopes and dreams. Ngeti, with the help of her parents embody the spirit of heroism. They show us the steps we can take as the people to change and evolve from old traditions which are not beneficial to the girlchild and the personal development of young people out the society.

As we all know, traditions take time to change and it is up to us, the people to propel social behavioral change. Therefore, Tai Tanzania in partnership with UNESCO decided to create this short 3D Animations film which is not only entertain but also educate our communities about critical issues.

Just like the way Ngeti fights against female genital mutilation, you can too, in your own unique way. Remember, you do not need to wear a cape to be a hero.

Hauhitaji Kofia Kuitwa Shujaa.
