Leaving no one behind

There are hundreds of thousands of people living with albinism in Tanzania, many who have felt growing up is like a punishment. Human Rights Watch, 2019

Imagine being born, a child without any faults, yet being a target within your own community from birth? This is what people with albinism are attached to the moment they come into the world. Whether young or old. People with Albinism in Tanzania have been forced to deal with being victims of intense physical harassment and abuse. From murder, bullying to the decapitation of body parts for witchcraft purposes, there was no telling who would attack you as both the local community and family members were potential attackers (Under The Same Sun, 2015).

Stigma and bias against people with albinism in still very high in Tanzania, this is why Tai Tanzania uses the power of storytelling to break apart false thoughts and assumption about people with albinism. We are launching a new 3D animated short film called Nivushe aimed at educating the community about albinism in order to destroy the false assumptions about albinism. Funded byUSADF,Nivushe is a short film which will reach millions of Tanzanians within the country and beyond our borders. As the government and other institutions play their role to create policies and laws, provide shelter and necessary tools needed to help people living with albinism, Tai Tanzania plays a crucial role of educating the community and spreading the message of supporting and protecting people living with albinism.

The Nivushe Launch will be held on the 11th of this month at Mlimani City Mall. Tai Tanzania will host more than 100 guests from multiple organisations whose main focus is to protect people living with disabilities. We would like to celebrate this huge milestone of being able to effectively use storytelling as an edutainment (educational and entertainment) tool which propels positive social change.

Educating the community will allow people to understand albinism is not a disease or a curse, therefore, people with albinism are just as capable of achieving great heights and should not be put on the sideline and be harassed. We want people with albinism to feel more secure in their own homes. We are leaving no one behind.

Hatuachi Mtu Nyuma

(Under The Same Sun, 2015).

Hatuachi mtu nyuma.
