Education Over Early Marriage

In 2014, the UNFPA reported that Tanzania had the highest rates of child marriage; 2 in 5 girls would get married before their 18th birthday. Do you know how child marriage has affected and is currently affecting numerous young girls?

Child marriage exposes young girls to teen pregnancies which can lead to increased maternal risks, leaves them prone to sexually transmitted diseases, brings psychological trauma and puts a large barrier for the child to continue with their academic journey. Ultimately, the young girl grows up to be dependent and is held back from living the full potential of her life. Due to the Law of Marriage Act 1971, girls can be married or at 14 at the approval of the court and at 15 at the consent of the parent. This is why it is important to raise awareness about the issues young girls may face when forced into child marriage.

Through the use of 3D Animations, Tai Tanzania in partnership with UNESCO we are releasing our Animation Film called Naweza. Naweza means ‘I Can’, evoking the reality that young girls can and should have the freedom to continue with their education rather than be consumed in child marriage. Our victim, Time finds herself face to face with a child marriage agenda as her parents’ worsening economic situation continues to be their motivation to marry their daughter off. What steps can Time take to protect herself and hold on to an academic journey that is crucial for her future?

Many young girls’ which face similar situations probably as themselves the same questions. Through Naweza, Tai Tanzania will communicate the importance of having a community that supports young girls and their dream to fly higher in their educational and professional journey.

Our partnership with the Tanzanian Government, and organizations like the UNFPA, UNESCO, UN Women, and KOICA Tanzania, have taken steps forward to reduce child marriage. Child marriage is against human rights and we can protect our young girls who can move mountains from being held back as great leaders and change-makers they truly are. I Can and You Can protect the girl child from child marriage. We are doing it by raising awareness through 3D Animations Films, how do you plan to fight against child marriage?

Picha inayomuonesha Time akiwa kwenye mshtuko.
